Atanas Zafirov, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party — the successor of the former communist dictatorship party — chose to travel to Beijing this week, appearing at the Chinese military parade alongside Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko, and Kim Jong Un.
For a NATO and EU member, this is not simply poor judgment; it is a warning sign.

The optics highlight both the contradictions of Bulgaria’s democratic transition and how Russian and Chinese influence continue to find fertile ground in its politics.
